Why Diabetic Footwear Matters

Diabetes can reduce circulation and sensation in the feet, meaning small blisters or pressure points can go unnoticed and develop into serious wounds. Therapeutic shoes and inserts are designed with extra depth, seamless interiors, and protective toe boxes to minimize friction and distribute pressure evenly — helping prevent complications before they start.

Medicare Coverage for Diabetic Shoes

Medicare Part B covers one pair of therapeutic shoes and up to three pairs of inserts per calendar year for qualifying patients with diabetes. To qualify, you generally need:

  • A diagnosis of diabetes
  • Documentation from your treating physician of a qualifying foot condition (such as neuropathy, poor circulation, foot deformity, history of ulcers, or partial amputation)
  • A prescription from your podiatrist or physician
  • A certification statement from the doctor managing your diabetes

ABT Medical Supply handles the paperwork. We coordinate with your physician, verify your benefits, and let you know exactly what is covered before your fitting.

Coverage requirements vary by plan and individual circumstances. Our team will verify your benefits.
